Best Microchip Cat Flaps
For Large Cats
Standard cat flaps are 142mm wide. A 6kg Ragdoll simply won't fit. We found the best flaps that offer security without the squeeze.
If you have a Maine Coon, Norwegian Forest Cat, or just a big Tom, finding a microchip flap is frustrating.
Most "Smart Flaps" are designed for the average 4kg moggy. Attempting to shove a large cat through a standard SureFlap (142mm wide) is like trying to squeeze into skinny jeans. It's undignified and uncomfortable.
Size Matters: The Golden Rule
For a cat over 5kg, look for an opening width of at least 160mm. The standard 142mm is too tight for broad shoulders and may cause "sensor refusal" (where the chip reader doesn't trigger because the cat can't get close enough comfortably).
Top Picks for Big Cats
1. SureFlap Microchip "Pet Door"
Best OverallImportant: Do not buy the "Cat Flap". You need the "Pet Door". SureFlap confuses everyone with their naming. The "Pet Door" is significantly larger (178mm wide vs 142mm).
It is big enough for Maine Coons and small dogs (Terriers). The "Connect" version also has app control, so you can lock it from your phone.
- Huge Opening: 178mm x 170mm.
- Curfew Mode: Set lock times via the App (Connect version).
- Pricey: The Connect bundle (Door + Hub) is £150+.
2. Closer Pets (Cat Mate) Large
Best Budget Option. Formerly known as Cat Mate, this brand offers a solid, basic microchip flap. It lacks the app connectivity and curfew timers of the SureFlap, but it has a generous size for larger cats.
It uses a simple rotary lock (4-way: In Only, Out Only, Locked, Open). No fancy apps, just reliable mechanics.
- Best Value: Often half the price of SureFlap.
- Decent Size: Good for cats up to 7-8kg.
- Loud: The click mechanism is noisier than SureFlap.
3. PetSafe Microchip Cat Flap
The Runner Up. A decent middle ground. It has a slightly better draft excluder than the Cat Mate but isn't as smart as the SureFlap.
Warning: The opening size (150mm) is smaller than the SureFlap Pet Door. Check your cat's width!

Installation Tips
- Belly Height RuleMeasure your cat's belly height (floor to stomach). The bottom of the flap hole should be at this height. If it's too high, they scrape their belly. Too low, they have to crouch.
- Metal DoorsIf your door has metal inside (and most uPVC doors do), you MUST buy the mounting adaptor. Metal blocks the chip reader signal. The adaptor acts as a spacer.
